Shopify Fee & Payment Processing Calculator

The Shopify Fee and Payment Processing Calculator estimates the full monthly cost of selling on Shopify by combining payment processing fees, any extra transaction fees, and your plan's subscription cost. From your monthly revenue, order count, plan, and whether you use Shopify Payments it returns processing fees, additional transaction fees where they apply, plan cost, total monthly fees, and your effective fee percentage of revenue. The result shows what Shopify genuinely costs you each month rather than just the headline plan price.

Who it's for: Shopify merchants who want to see their true all-in monthly cost of payment processing, transaction fees, and subscription, and compare it across plans.

How the Shopify Fee Calculator works

You enter monthly revenue, number of orders, your Shopify plan (Basic, Shopify, or Advanced), and whether you use Shopify Payments, and the processing rate and per-order fee are editable so you can match your exact terms. Payment processing fees are revenue multiplied by the percentage rate plus orders multiplied by the per-order fee, capturing both the percentage and flat components of card processing on every transaction.

If you do not use Shopify Payments and instead route card payments through a third-party gateway, Shopify applies an additional transaction fee on top of the gateway's own charges. The tool adds this as revenue multiplied by the non-Shopify-Payments rate, which falls as you move up plans. When you do use Shopify Payments, this fee is zero, which is usually the single biggest reason merchants choose it.

The plan's monthly subscription cost is added next, and the three pieces (processing fees, any extra transaction fees, and plan cost) sum to total monthly fees. Dividing total fees by revenue gives your effective fee percentage, a single number that tells you what share of every sale goes to Shopify and card processing combined. That effective rate is the most useful figure for comparing plans, because a pricier plan with lower fees can come out cheaper at higher volume.

The calculator ships with default US online-card rates as a convenience, and they are fully editable in the tool. The defaults are roughly: Basic at 2.9 percent plus 0.30 per order, about 39 per month, with a 2 percent third-party transaction fee; the Shopify plan at 2.7 percent plus 0.30, about 105 per month, with a 1 percent fee; and Advanced at 2.5 percent plus 0.30, about 399 per month, with a 0.5 percent fee. Always confirm these against Shopify's current pricing page, because rates change over time and vary by country, plan, and card type.

The formula

Payment processing fees = revenue x processing rate + orders x per-order fee. Additional transaction fees (only if NOT using Shopify Payments) = revenue x non-Shopify-Payments rate. Total monthly fees = processing fees + additional transaction fees + monthly plan cost. Effective fee % = total monthly fees / revenue.

Frequently asked questions

Are the default rates in this calculator current and guaranteed?+

No. The defaults are typical US online-card rates provided to get you started, and they are editable in the tool for that reason. Shopify changes its pricing periodically, and rates differ by country, plan, card type, and whether a sale is online or in person. Always verify the current numbers against Shopify's official pricing page and enter your own rates before relying on the totals.

What is the extra transaction fee and how do I avoid it?+

When you process payments through a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee on each sale, on top of whatever your gateway charges. You avoid it entirely by using Shopify Payments, which sets that fee to zero. For most merchants this avoided fee outweighs any reason to use an outside gateway, though availability of Shopify Payments depends on your country.

How does the effective fee percentage help me choose a plan?+

Effective fee percentage is total monthly fees divided by revenue, so it folds the subscription cost and all processing and transaction fees into one comparable rate. A higher plan costs more per month but usually carries lower processing and transaction rates, so above a certain revenue level its effective percentage drops below a cheaper plan's. Comparing effective rates at your actual volume shows which plan is truly cheapest for you.

Why does the per-order fee matter so much for low-priced products?+

The flat per-order fee is charged on every transaction regardless of order value, so on a small order it represents a large share of revenue while on a large order it is negligible. Brands with low average order values and high order counts feel this flat fee far more than the percentage rate. If you sell inexpensive items, watch the per-order fee closely, because it can quietly raise your effective rate well above the headline percentage.

Does this calculator include every cost of selling on Shopify?+

It covers payment processing fees, third-party transaction fees, and your plan subscription, which are the core recurring Shopify costs. It does not include paid apps, themes, custom domains, chargeback fees, currency-conversion costs, or in-person and international card rates, which vary widely by store. Treat the result as your baseline platform and processing cost, and add your own app and operational costs on top for a full picture.
